Woody progress 10/30/18
Hi Ann,
Sorry this is a day late but I worked a bit later in the day yesterday and didn't get on my computer last night. Thank you for the latest check and the card of your brother and his wife with the woody!
In the week ending Friday:
As I noted in the last update, we worked a bit over last weekend.
- The tailgate was removed from the car and disassembly begun
- All wood and ancillary parts removed (with the exception of the hinge which will be removed for further cleaning and painting at a later time).
Undercoating mechanically stripped using a heat gun to soften
Damage to the seam at the inner and outer lower panels along with signs of debris inside the panel led to removal of the inner brace by drilling the spot welds. A good thing we did this as it was loaded with rocks and dirt and some rust and corrosion had started to set in. We will be able to clean this up and arrest corrosion without significant metal replacement.
The wood was removed from the passenger and driver side rear of the car. Again, we did encounter corrosion and pitting but the good news is like the tailgate we will be able to remove the surface scale and stop further rust using a catalyst and encapsulation method. Most of the heavy scale in is in the area just under the sliding windows which have yet to be removed I won't know for certain until I've removed the windows but at this time, do not anticipate having to cut and weld any new metal into these areas.
Earlier in the week I also removed much of the grime from rear axle assembly. While there is still disassembly, cleaning and painting in the future, you can see some progress here too.
Work continue over the weekend into this week and all wood is now off the car! Debris and rust removal are primary concerns. I'll leave the details of this for next week's update but with the exception of the front floorboard, things are generally looking better than I expected!
