Dave Rich Update 1/8/2019

Hi Ann!
First, thank you for the most recent card!  It is great to see the car so very close to when it was new.

In this past week, we performed the following work on the woody:

Disassembled the top half of the engine then removed the engine and transmission from the frame and separated the two units from each other.

There are a few problems to deal with but nothing really unexpected for an engine of this age.

There is significant rust and scale buildup in the engine.

Some cooling passages in the cylinder heads were completely blocked.

This picture from the water pump outlet into the block, illustrates the amount of rusty sludge.  The pump inlets were all but blocked  This along with the radiator problems would have made the car run very hot had you tried running it in its current state for any length of time.

The machine shop will get this all cleaned out.

One of the head bolts broke off and will require extraction.
The transmission mounting bolt holes in the block are stripped out with only the tips of the bolts engaging.  These will require inserts.

We also worked on getting the body ready for the rotator fixture and media blasting.  With the exception of the door frames and door sill panels (which will be removed once we have the car on the rotation fixture), we removed all remaining items from the firewall and body shell. There were a bunch of small items and screws to remove and catalog.  We found the following date of manufacture on the firewall side of the heater box!

The car itself would have been put together with a few weeks - at most - of this date.  Due to preserving this history and the overall good condition, we will leave this area of the box as is and not refinish.  Just touch it up as needed.

Began disassembly and inspection of the engine block assembly.  Beyond what was noted above, the engine disassembly is going fairly well and we should have that completed by the end of the week assuming all goes according to plan. So far, the cooling pumps,  lower pulley, timing cover and some of the valves are out.

This picture was prior to the valve removal work.  Normally the block would be on a stand but the stripped out mounting holes prevents this.

And that's the update for now!

Best regards
Dave
